Nearly 40% of U.S. merchants now accept cryptocurrency payments, according to a PayPal survey conducted in partnership with the National Cryptocurrency Association. The findings highlight a seismic shift in commerce, with 84% of businesses anticipating crypto payments will become standard within five years.

Customer demand is driving this adoption. A striking 88% of merchants report fielding crypto payment inquiries, while 69% say customers attempt to use digital assets at least monthly. "This isn't experimentation anymore," says May Zabaneh, PayPal's crypto VP. "Businesses accepting crypto are seeing tangible value."

The data suggests crypto's transition from speculative asset to practical payment tool. Merchants increasingly view digital assets as both growth levers and customer acquisition tools, with 79% recognizing their strategic value. PayPal's findings underscore crypto's accelerating march toward mainstream commerce.
